Royal Residences

Buckingham Palace-Buckingham Palace has served as a residence of British Sovereigns since 1837. It is the administrative headquarters of the monarch. Buckingham Palace has an astonishing 775 rooms including: 19 state rooms, 52 Royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms. More than 50,000 people visit this famous palace every year. The largest room in the Buckingham Palace is the Ballroom, which was opened in 1856.

Windsor Castle-Windsor Castle is the official residence of the Queen. It's the largest occupied castle in the whole world. It has been a Royal home and fortress for over 900 years. The Queen uses the castle as both a private home and a Royal residence. Many Royal weddings have been celebrated in St. George's Chapel, located in the castle. Many parts of Windsor Castle are open to the public.

Palace of Holyroodhouse-The Palace of Holyroodhouse was founded as a monastery in 1128. It is the Queen's official residence in Scotland. It has been the setting for state ceremonies. During Holyrood Week, which is usually from the end of June to early July, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh carry out Royal engagements in Scotland. During Holyrood Week, it is estimated that the Queen and Prince Phillip entertain over 8,000 guests.

Frogmore-Frogmore lies in the private home park of Windsor Castle. It has been a country residence of various monarchs since the 17th century. Both Queen Victoria and her husband are buried in the garden there. It is no longer a Royal residence, but is sometimes used by the Royal family.

Balmoral Castle-Balmoral Castle is located in Aberseenshire, Scotland. It is a private residence of the Queen from August to September. It is open for visitors from April to July.

Sandringham Palace-Sandringham Palace is located in Norfolk, Scotland and has been a private home for sovereigns since 1862. The Queen and other members of the Royal Family spend Christmas through February at the Sandringham Palace. It is open to visitors.

St. James Palace-St. James Palace is the senior palace of the sovereign. It has a very long history as a Royal residence. It is home to several Royal Family members. However, it is not open to the public.

Clarence House-Clarence House stands beside St. James Palace in London. It was built between 1825 and 1827. King William IV lived at Clarence House during his reign. It was home to the Queen Mother from 1953-2002. It was also home to the Queen(then Princess Elizabeth) and the Duke of Edinburgh following their marriage. It is the official residence of the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince William and Prince Harry. It is open to the public during the summer.

Kensington Palace-Kengsinton Palace is a working Royal residence. It was the favorite Royal residence intil 1760. It was the birthplace and childhood home of Queen Victoria. Several Royal Family members currently live at Kengsington Palace. It is furnished with many items of the Royal collection.
